Kimu Village is located at the base of Mpyupyu Hill. This photo shows air rotary drilling, which is ideal for this fractured hard rock environment.
The Kimu water committee, and in particular its chairwoman, kneeling front, were fully engaged in the process. The final location for their well was a compromise between the data and the villagers' desire. The data suggested a well further from the center of Kimu would have been best, but splitting the difference and drilling somewhat closer to the main part of the village still netted a successful borehole.
This well is in constant use, serves several area villages, and because it is so reliable, it attracts many users from the nearby Trading Center. The chief estimated it provides water for over 200 households in the area.
The water committee reported they have a difficult time collecting fees from the growing number of users. The team and committee discussed that they might buy parts with the collected funds so that they have spares when needed. Keeping spares instead of cash is safer and more transparent to the community.
