Kuchilimba is on the north side of Chanda Hill. Its original well gave good water, but after a few buckets, the women had to wait 30 minutes for it to recharge. In the photo, Evance Mwathunga visited that well and confirmed the problem.
The villagers wanted a new well to be dug right next to the unproductive well, but the data did not support this as a viable option. The photo shows the team attempting to rehabilitate the old well, but that effort failed because the well was too high up the hill. The team explained to the Kuchilimba water committee that it would not be a suitable location and, sadly, had to walk away from the project..
Later, the villagers from Kuchilimba learned about the successful well that had been dug at the nearby village of Jimu 2. They contacted the team and asked them to come back to drill a well in a suitable location. A compromise was reached, a successful well was drilled, and is providing a better source of reliable water for the area. The old well is unreliable and not being used.
In September, 2022, Dulanya and Larson met with water committee members from Kuchilimba. The new borehole supports approximately 43 families. The borehole is good and provides plenty of water. As at the other boreholes, the challenge is raising money for maintenance.
